Paying for Wellness Program for a Dead Pet
January 16, 2008
Now here’s a heart-rending scenario. A woman signs up for a “wellness program” for her cat. For a monthly fee, the cat is covered for vaccinations and exams and gets various other medical services at a discount. The cat develops epilepsy and must be euthanized, so the woman tries to cancel the plan, only to find out she’s agreed to participate for a year and is on the hook for a whole year’s payments. So she’s paying a monthly fee for a pet wellness program and the wellness of the beneficiary has become, shall we say, a moot point.
To have to put a pet down is hard enough. To deal with this on top of it . . . just awful.
Truly this is a situation where the company selling the plan should have made it clear up front what this woman was signing on for. (Who reads all the fine print on policies like this? I know I don’t.)
