I think it’s fascinating that Mother’s Day was originally conceived by social activist and poet Julia Ward Howe as a day for American women to unite in peace against the Civil War. Somewhere along the line, the pacifist theme was dropped and it just turned into “Adore Your Mom” Day. How did that happen? (And why the burden was placed on women to lobby for peace, when it’s primarily been men who fight wars, I don’t know, but that’s another rant for another day.)
