Quick, before it ends, I’m just going to say that October has been declared Movement Disorders Awareness Month. What I like about this article is that it highlights a little-known movement disorder called dystonia. It’s an affliction I know about all too well, I’m afraid. I’ve developed dystonia in my left hand and leg after making an otherwise miraculous recovery from a stroke almost two years ago. I’m grateful I’ve recovered so well, but it’s still a miserable condition to deal with. It causes painful clenching and spasms, there’s no cure for it and managing the condition is a hit-or-miss proposition, at best. However, now that one famous person’s bout with the condition has been reported, maybe it will get more attention (?). One can only hope.
For more information on dystonia, see this from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, or check out the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation’s Web site.
